Arsenal vs Chelsea Preview & Tips

Arsenal have the advantage heading into their EFL Cup semi-final second-leg of their tie with a one-goal advantage.

Chelsea face an uphill battle in midweek as they look to take their place at Wembley in the EFL Cup final.

  • The Gunners have seen both sides hit the back of the net in their last two EFL Cup matches
  • Chelsea have lost two of their last three against Arsenal (D1)

Head To Head

Arsenal have won seven of their last 10 against Chelsea, with the other three games ending as draws.

Arsenal Form

Arsenal have done things the hard way in the latter-stages of the EFL Cup, with a pair of regulation 2-0 wins over Port Vale and Brighton making way for two battling performances against Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

Against Palace, Arsenal needed penalties after the game ended in a draw. The first-leg of their semi-final against Chelsea saw the Gunners go 2-0 up before eventually finishing as 3-2 winners. While they head into the second-leg with a one-goal lead, it was a surprise to see Arsenal allow their lead to eventually get halved.

While I back Arsenal to continue their solid run in the EFL Cup, I do not believe this will be a simple match. Chelsea have looked far better of late, and I predict that they will breach Arsenal’s backline despite slipping to a defeat. This will see the Gunners move into the final, where they will play one of Manchester City or Newcastle

Chelsea Form

Chelsea have continually done things the hard way in the EFL Cup, with the Blues failing to keep a single clean sheet across their four matches.

A 2-1 win over Lincoln saw the Blues come from behind to win, while they almost allowed Wolves to come back from 3-1 down before eventually securing a pulsating 4-3 triumph. They may have beaten Cardiff 3-1 in Wales, but they were pegged back at 1-1 before accelerating away from their hosts.

It was no surprise to see the Blues lose to Arsenal in the semi-final first-leg then, with their clash at Stamford Bridge seeing the home side go 2-0 down. While they are only a goal down in the tie, Chelsea will struggle to beat Arsenal at the Emirates. I back them to continue their run of scoring in the competition, but I predict they will have to stomach elimination a step before the final.

Verdict

I am backing Arsenal to take their place at Wembley despite seeing their backline breached for the third consecutive EFL Cup match.
