Aston Villa vs Newcastle Preview & Tips
Aston Villa beat Tottenham 2-1 in the last round of the FA Cup to begin their campaign with victory over another Premier League outfit.
Like Villa, Newcastle were able to eliminate a fellow Premier League side in their last match as they knocked Bournemouth out in a thrilling 4-3 win.
- Aston Villa have won two of their last three against Newcastle (D1)
- Both sides have scored in two of the last three meetings in which Villa have been the home side
Head To Head
Aston Villa have won three of their last 10 against Newcastle, with the Magpies winning five times and two matches ending as draws.
Aston Villa Form
Aston Villa have been enjoying a fantastic season across competitions, with the side very much in the top four equation in the Premier League, while they took an automatic quarter-final spot in the Europa League after finishing in second in the group phase.
Now, Villa turn their attention to the FA Cup, with this a competition they will feel they have every chance of winning. Eliminating a solid Newcastle side will be a real statement of intent for the home side, especially after knocking Tottenham out in the last round.
While I back the home team to notch the win this weekend, I do not back them to keep a clean sheet. While the Magpies have not been great at the back themselves, they have been good going forward, and I back them to hit the back of the net.
Newcastle Form
Newcastle have found victories tough to come by in the Premier League, and they will hope that a change of competition will see them get on a roll once again.
With the exception of their 2-1 win over struggling Tottenham in midweek, Newcastle were winless in their previous five, losing four matches and drawing with PSG in the Champions League.
This winless run actually began with a 2-0 loss to Aston Villa, with defeats to Liverpool, Manchester City and Brentford following. Across their last five in all competitions, the Magpies have seen both sides score. While I back Newcastle to hit the back of the net, I do not see them beating a very good Aston Villa side.
Verdict
I am backing both sides to score as the home team move into the next round of the FA Cup with a battling win.
