Atalanta vs Bayern Munich Preview & Tips

Atalanta are aiming to eliminate another top Bundesliga outfit in the Champions League after beating Borussia Dortmund 4-3 on aggregate in the playoffs.

Bayern Munich may have finished second in the Champions League group stage, but they have been handed a very difficult task as they take on a stubborn Atalanta in the Round of 16.

The two sides are yet to meet in a competitive match, meaning this will be their first encounter.

Despite struggling through a three-game losing run against Athletic Bilbao, Royale Union SG and Borussia Dortmund, Atalanta still find themselves preparing for a Champions League Round of 16 match.

Defeats to Royale Union SG and Athletic Bilbao saw the Italian side miss out on a top eight spot, but they did not let this stop them as they secured a 4-3 aggregate win over Borussia Dortmund in a pulsating playoff tie.

The fact they arrive for this one on the back of eliminating Bayern Munich’s main challengers in the Bundesliga will give the Italian side a huge amount of confidence. While I do not back Atalanta to make it through the two-legged tie with Bayern, I do predict that they will make their opponents work for it as they ensure the Germans do not win the first-leg.

Finishing second in the group stage came courtesy of seven wins and one defeat, with Bayern Munich in excellent form across the early part of their campaign.

However, they have hardly been provided with an enviable tie after being drawn against Atalanta in the Round of 16. Their opponents are very good at home, while they have already eliminated Borussia Dortmund in one of the performances of the round in their second-leg.

While Bayern are the better of the two sides, any lapse in concentration against the Italians will see them punished. Playing the second-leg in Germany is a major advantage, and it is one I believe Bayern will have to make the most out of after failing to win in the first-leg.
