Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona Preview & Tips

Atletico Madrid slipped to a heartbreaking defeat on penalties at the hands of Real Madrid in midweek as their Champions League campaign was brought to an abrupt end.

Barcelona enjoyed a 3-1 home win against Benfica in midweek as they made it three consecutive wins in all competitions.

  • Atletico Madrid have drawn two of their last four home games in the league
  • Barcelona have drawn two of their last four on the road in La Liga
  • Robert Lewandowski has scored in five of his last eight in all competitions
  • The last meeting between the pair ended in a 4-4 draw

Head To Head

Barcelona have won five of their last 10 against Atletico, with the latter winning three meetings and two games ending as draws.

Atletico Madrid Form

Atletico Madrid's season is threatening to crumble at the most important moment, with a week to forget seeing them struggle across competitions.

Their 2-1 loss to Real Madrid in the first-leg of their Champions League clash was followed by a 1-0 win at home, with this sending the tie to penalties. However, Atleti were left heartbroken as they were beaten by their arch-rivals via spot-kicks. These two European games sandwiched a shock 2-1 loss to midtable Getafe in the league, with this seeing Atletico slip down to third in the league.

With Barcelona to come, Atletico have to get a result from this one. A win would send them above Barcelona and potentially to the top depending on Real Madrid's result. A defeat could see them slip four points behind Barca and Real.

While a win is the ideal way to bounce back from their midweek heartache, I believe a draw is more likely against an opponent in fine form. Atletico were excellent against Real in midweek and matched them across the park. Barcelona bring a different threat, but I back the home side to give their fans something to shout about at the weekend as their famous defensive solidity is put on full show.

Barcelona Form

Barcelona can end the week with a major statement if they are able to defeat Atletico Madrid in their huge match on Sunday.

Three wins in their last three in all competitions has helped to make up a stunning run of 17 without defeat across all competitions. This run has seen Barca take their place in the Champions League quarter-finals, while they now top the La Liga table. Interestingly, the last team to beat them was their next opponents just before Christmas.

Robert Lewandowski failed to hit the back of the net in midweek, with this his second successive failure in front of goal. With the striker likely to play a big role in this game, I am backing him to find the back of the net as the travelling side secure a hard-fought point.

Verdict

I am backing Robert Lewandowski to end his two-game scoreless run as Atletico Madrid hold their title rivals at home.
