Atletico Madrid vs Club Brugge Preview & Tips

Atletico Madrid saw a 2-0 lead over Club Brugge evaporate as the first-leg of their Champions League playoff ended 3-3.

Club Brugge are very much in their Champions League playoff tie after stunning their opponents in a battling 3-3 draw.

  • Atletico have scored and conceded in all four of their Champions League home games
  • Club Brugge have lost three of their four away games in Europe (W1)

Head To Head

The pair have met seven times before, with both sides winning twice and three games ending as draws.

Atletico Madrid Form

Atletico Madrid have seen their usually dependable defence struggle in recent European matches, with the Spanish side failing to keep a single clean sheet across their opening nine.

Across their last three Champions League matches, Atleti have failed to win, drawing with Galatasaray and Club Brugge, while they lost at home to Bodo/Glimt.

Prior to this, they had won three consecutive matches, with two home wins coming over Royale Union SG and Inter Milan. While the Spanish side have been inconsistent in Europe this year, they still boast three wins in four away games.

While I predict Atleti’s defence to concede once again, I back the home side to get the job done as they make up for failing to return to Spain with the lead.

Club Brugge Form

Club Brugge proved they are not in the Champions League playoffs merely to make up the numbers with a brilliant 3-3 draw against Atletico Madrid.

Prior to their draw with Atleti, Club Brugge had beaten Kairat Almaty 4-1 before downing Marseille in a 3-0 win. These two wins put an end to a five-game winless run that featured four defeats and a draw.

While the travelling side will likely have their moments in the match, their form on the road has been very poor. Four away games have ended in three defeats and a single win over Kairat Almaty, who finished the group stage at the foot of the table.

While I back Club Brugge to breach Atletico’s defence, I do not back them to secure the win as they are knocked out of the Champions League.

Verdict

I am backing the home side to move into the next round of the Champions League despite once again failing to keep a clean sheet.
