Atletico Madrid vs Tottenham Preview & Tips

Atletico Madrid are looking to build on an impressive 4-1 home win over a stubborn Club Brugge side that saw them advance 7-4 on aggregate.

Tottenham may have finished in the top eight in the group stage of the Champions League, but they arrive for their Round of 16 clash in awful form.

  • Atletico have only lost one of their last seven in Europe (W4, D2)
  • Tottenham have scored and conceded in each of their last four in all tournaments

Head To Head

The pair have only met once before, with Atletico Madrid beating Spurs 1-0 in a friendly back in 2016.

Atletico Madrid Form

Atletico Madrid had to do things the hard way to make it to the Champions League Round of 16 after finishing 14th in the group-stage, three points short of Manchester City in eighth.

Their task in the playoffs was a tricky clash with Club Brugge. While they did return to Spain for the second-leg with the tie level, they conceded four goals in a pulsating match. The usually so miserly Atleti that we have become accustomed to seeing has seemingly disappeared, with the side conceding 15 goals in eight group games.

Despite their defensive solidity cracking after failing to keep a clean sheet across their last 10 Champions League matches, Atletico will be confident heading into this one. Tottenham have been woeful of late, and Atleti have won four of their five at home in the competition.

I do not back Atletico to end their surprisingly long run without a clean sheet, but I do predict that they will win this one as they head to London ahead in the tie.

Tottenham Form

It is incredible that a side that finished in the top eight of the Champions League is currently staring relegation to the second tier of their own footballing league in the face, with Tottenham’s 2025/26 season one that has had some big highs and incredible lows.

While they managed to win five of their eight European matches along with two draws and a defeat, they arrive for the first-leg of their Champions League Round of 16 clash on the back of five consecutive defeats.

Their inability to end their woeful run is a major worry for Spurs, who have been on a major downward slide for some time now. With the prospect of relegation to the Championship, will this impact Spurs as they head into the latter stages of the biggest club competition in the world?

Tottenham have excelled in the Champions League this season, but their last win over Eintracht Frankfurt came at the end of January. Since then, they have drawn with Manchester City and lost to Manchester United, Newcastle, Arsenal, Fulham and Crystal Palace, and I predict Atletico Madrid will add their name to this list in midweek.

Verdict

I am backing the home side to secure a vital Champions League win as they hand Tottenham yet another disappointing result.
