Basel vs Aston Villa Preview & Tips

Basel were beaten 2-1 by Genk in their last game as their inconsistent start to the new Europa League season was extended.

Aston Villa secured a battling 2-1 win over Young Boys in their last game as they extended their winning run in Europe to two matches.

The pair have met twice before, with Villa winning once and one game ending as a draw.

Basel have not made an ideal start to the Europa League season, with the side winning two of their opening five and losing the other three.

While Basel currently sit in 24th and the final playoff spot, their hold on the position is tenuous at best. Seven teams sit three points or less behind them, while they are now four points short of Porto in eighth and the final automatic knock-out spot.

Basel need to start winning games regularly if they are to seriously contend for the trophy, but I do not believe this is likely. Against Aston Villa, they will take on one of the best sides in the competition. While I do predict that they will score in a competitive game, I believe they will come away with a third 2-1 loss across their four defeats in the competition.

Aston Villa have been good in the Europa League, with only a frustrating 2-1 loss to Go Ahead Eagles denying them a perfect record and top-spot in the competition.

Away from this defeat, Villa have beaten Bologna, Feyenoord and Maccabi Tel Aviv to nil, while they fought to a 2-1 win over Young Boys in their last outing. With 12 points coming from a possible 15, Villa have been outstanding at juggling challenging in the Premier League and flying in Europe.

Villa's winning run in all competitions was extended to seven matches following their stunning 2-1 win over Arsenal at the weekend. With Villa winning three of their last five with a 2-1 scoreline, I back them to edge to another statement win.
