Bayer Leverkusen vs Newcastle Preview & Tips
Bayer Leverkusen secured a potentially season defining result in the Champions League in game five as they beat Manchester City 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
Newcastle United slipped to a 2-1 loss at the hands of Marseille in their last European match as they failed to take advantage of going 1-0 up against their hosts.
- The sides have scored in both of their previous meetings
- The Germans have won their last two in Europe
Head To Head
Newcastle have won both of their previous meetings with Bayer Leverkusen as they notched two 3-1 wins back in 2003.
Bayer Leverkusen Form
Despite failing to win any of their opening three in Europe, Bayer Leverkusen have been able to climb up the standings, meaning the Germans are just four points behind PSG in second.
A pair of draws with Copenhagen and PSV along with a 7-2 defeat to PSG in their opening three games saw the German side pick up two points from a possible nine. Since then, they have beaten Benfica 1-0 before downing City 2-0 to move onto eight points.
While Leverkusen have been slightly wobbly at times in Europe, they will be confident that they can notch a third consecutive win in the competition. Having conceded 10 goals in five European outings, I do not back the home team to keep a clean sheet.
Newcastle Form
Newcastle have been frustrating in the Champions League, with the side at times superb before then slipping to defeat.
Their loss to Barcelona was followed by wins over Royale Union SG, Benfica and Athletic Bilbao. However, their three-game winning run was brought to an end with a 2-1 loss to Marseille, with this a game Newcastle capitulated in as they let a one-goal lead slip.
The worry for the Magpies will be that they have lost four of their last five away games in all competitions, while their hosts are in good form. I do back Newcastle to continue their run of scoring in each of their five European matches.
Verdict
I am backing the home side to extract a third consecutive win in the Champions League despite failing to keep a clean sheet.
