Leverkusen have won seven of their last 10 against their opponents, with Monchengladbach winning once and two games ending as draws.

Borussia Monchengladbach found the Bundesliga in 2023/24 a very tough place to ply their trade as they avoided a relegation playoff spot by a single point.

Just seven wins across their 34 matches came alongside 14 defeats and 67 goals conceded. While their run of eight wins on the bounce over the last few months is impressive, they have hardly played sides of the highest quality. Indeed, taking on Ipswich under-21's is not in the same quality bracket as their next opponents.

While Monchengladbach have the honour of helping to lift the curtain on the new season, I do not believe they will find a way to upset the apple-cart as they slip to defeat in game one.

Bayer Leverkusen Form

Bayer Leverkusen were sublime last season as they went across the entire league campaign without losing. While the Bundesliga is hardly the most competitive league in football, managing to avoid defeat in a league in which Bayern Munich play is very impressive.

Pre-season has been fairly good for Leverkusen, with the side winning one friendly and one cup game, while they have drawn twice and only lost to Arsenal. With their game against Arsenal excluded, Leverkusen have continued to showcase their impressive ability to avoid defeat.

With their battling win on penalties over Stuttgart in the cup helping them to begin the new season with a win, I am backing the reigning champions to kick things off with victory.

I am backing Monchengladbach to breach the defence of the travelling side only to fail to keep a clean sheet as the reigning champions start as they mean to go on.
