Cardiff vs Chelsea Preview & Tips

Cardiff arrive for their latest EFL Cup match in good form, with the side dispensing on Welsh rivals Wrexham in a 2-1 win in the last round.

Chelsea needed all of the four goals they scored against Wolves in the last round as they snuck through on the back of a thrilling 4-3 win.

  • Neither side has kept a clean sheet in their last two EFL outings
  • The Blues have won their last five against Cardiff

Head To Head

Chelsea have won six of their last 10 against Cardiff, with the Welsh side winning three matches and one game ending as a draw.

Cardiff Form

Cardiff City have enjoyed a solid start to their EFL Cup campaign, but they now face their biggest test of the season so far.

Wins over Swindon and Cheltenham set them up well before they beat Premier League opposition in Burnley at Turf Moor. They then beat Wrexham 2-1 to set up their clash with the Blues. Cardiff have proved tough to beat so far, scoring at least two goals in each of their opening four.

The major worry for Cardiff will be that there is a huge difference in quality between Chelsea and any side they have faced so far. While the Blues are hardly in the best of form right now, the League One side will struggle to deal with the quality of the travelling side.

Chelsea Form

It has not been a particularly good December for Chelsea, with the side struggling across the Premier League and Champions League.

Now, they turn their attention to the EFL Cup, with this a competition they will feel they can win. Their two previous outings in the competition saw the Blues beat Lincoln 2-1 before they then eliminated Wolves in a 4-3 triumph.

While the Blues have won twice, they have not secured either win with ease. Indeed, they went 1-0 down against Lincoln, while they almost managed to spurn a 3-0 lead against Wanderers. The London side have struggled for clean sheets of late, with their young defence and shaky goalkeeper almost always ensuring the opposition are gifted chances.

While I back the Blues to win this one, I believe they will have to do it the hard way as they concede against an opponent that will look to ride the momentum the crowd tries to generate.

Verdict

I am backing Chelsea to take their place in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup despite failing to keep a clean sheet for the third consecutive match in the competition.
