Liverpool vs PSG
Liverpool’s hopes of making it into the semi-finals of the Champions League hang by a thread after a 2-0 loss to PSG in the first-leg of their clash. While a two-goal deficit may not sound like much, the manner of their defeat alludes to this being a mountain that will be incredibly tough to climb. PSG were far too good for the Reds last week, with the English side needing to be near-perfect to win on aggregate.
PSG are edging towards consecutive Champions League crowns after another win over a Premier League opponent. After beating Tottenham 5-3 in the group stage and drawing 1-1 with Newcastle, PSG were able to dismantle Chelsea in 5-2 and 3-0 wins. Against the Blues, PSG stormed to a win at home before hammering their opponents in England. I expect more of the same this week as the French side continue to eliminate Premier League opponents.
Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid
Bayern Munich have one foot in the Champions League semi-finals after securing a 2-1 win over Real Madrid in Spain last week. Their triumph was built on keeping the ball and frustrating Real before pouncing when they found any gaps or lazy runners. At home, the German side will be supremely confident that they can finish the job, and this will be doubly so if Harry Kane can continue to score. Having scored 15 goals across his last 11 games, I back the English forward to hit the back of the net once again.
Real Madrid struggled to match the intensity and quality of Bayern last week as the Germans put on a footballing clinic. While Real are still in the tie after breaching the defence of the Germans, they know they have little room for error against one of the most ruthless sides in the game. While they will likely have their moments, I predict that the Spanish side’s hopes of winning the Champions League this season will end in the quarter-finals.
Arsenal vs Sporting
Arsenal edge to an unconvincing 1-0 win over Sporting in Portugal last week as they struck in the closing moments of the match. While usually so defensively sound, Arsenal had to rely on a string of saves from David Raya, with the goalkeeper in fine form. This tight win over Sporting was reminiscent of their 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen in the last round. After drawing in Germany, the Gunners battled to a 2-0 win at home, and I predict another low scoring triumph at the Emirates this week.
Sporting were unable to come good on their impressive home record in Europe last week as they failed to win for the first time in six home ties. Now, they must travel to London and beat the Gunners by one goal to send the clash into extra-time. However, in their previous six matches against Arsenal, they have failed to win, losing three times and drawing three matches. With their poor record against the Gunners in mind, I am backing Arsenal to win this match in a battling performance.
Verdict
I am backing PSG and Arsenal to complete the job against Liverpool and Sporting respectively, while I back Harry Kane to continue to score goals for Bayern.
