Chelsea vs Arsenal Preview & Tips
Chelsea battled to a 3-1 win over Cardiff in their last EFL Cup game as they edged into the semi-finals with an unconvincing win.
Arsenal needed penalties to finally beat Crystal Palace in the last round of the EFL Cup as they moved closer to securing the first trophy of the season.
- Both teams have scored the last three times Chelsea have hosted this contest
- Arsenal have won six of their last nine against the Blues (D3)
Head To Head
Arsenal have won six of their last 10 against Chelsea with the Blues winning once and three games ending as draws.
Chelsea Form
Chelsea are in need of a big result after a run of woeful form that has seen them slip down the Premier League table, with this costing Enzo Maresca his job.
A clash with Arsenal is never easy, while a meeting in the semi-final of a cup competition will only see the stakes raised. The Blues have been nowhere near the level of their opponents, and this is shown but the disparity between the pair in both form and in the Premier League table.
Positively for Chelsea, they have won all three of their previous EFL Cup matches. However, wins over Lincoln, Wolves and Cardiff have seen Chelsea fail to keep a single clean sheet, while the highest quality opponent they have beaten came in the form of lowly Wolves.
With the Gunners eying a 10th consecutive game without losing to Chelsea, I back Arsenal to grind out an advantage heading into the second-leg. This will see them strengthen their chances of a final against Manchester City, who face Newcastle on Tuesday.
Arsenal Form
Arsenal have not been hugely convincing across their EFL Cup run, and yet they are currently just two games away from appearing in the final of the competition this year.
Wins over Port Vale and Brighton have come in 2-0 scorelines, while they did eventually eliminate Crystal Palace in the quarter-finals via penalties. While progressing in the cup is all that matters, the Gunners were pushed all the way in the last round.
While they have had the best of Chelsea for quite some time now, I predict that they will struggle to contain the Blues in front of their own fans. I do back them to win this match, but I believe they will fail to win to nil as they concede for the fourth consecutive time on the road against their opponents.
Verdict
I am backing Arsenal to squeeze to victory in this one as both sides hit the back of the net.
