Fenerbahce vs Aston Villa Preview & Tips
Fenerbahce hammered Brann 4-0 in their last Europa League outing as they bounced back from a pair of draws in the previous rounds.
Aston Villa eased to a 2-1 win over Basel in their last match as they extended their winning run in the Europa League to three matches.
- Villa have won five of their six Europa League matches this season (L1)
- Fenerbahce have failed to win three of their six matches (L1, D2)
Head To Head
The pair have met twice before, with Villa winning both meetings in the UEFA Cup back in 1977.
Fenerbahce Form
Fenerbahce are chasing the coattails of the sides above them in the Europa League, with Porto in eighth currently sitting two points clear of them.
A win in this one would be their fourth in seven attempts, and it would move them on to 14 points. Last season, 14 points was enough to see a side finish in the top eight, although it may be closer to 16 if the top sides keeping winning as they are.
For Fenerbahce, the focus must be on winning this match and staying within reach of teams like Villa. Defeat could see the top eight move out of reach. Despite their need for a win, I am backing against Fenerbahce in this one. Villa have looked very strong, and I predict that the home side will become the latest team to fall at the hands of Unai Emery’s men.
Aston Villa Form
Aston Villa are looking for something of a pick-me-up after a frustrating 1-0 loss to Everton in the Premier League at the weekend. This defeat put an end to a three-game unbeaten run that featured a draw with Crystal Palace along with wins over Tottenham and Nottingham Forest, who play Braga in midweek.
In Europe, Villa have only lost once, while they have won five times, with three of these wins coming since their defeat to Go Ahead Eagles. Their 15-point haul means they are two clear of Porto, with a win in this one enough to nearly guarantee their place in the top eight.
While Villa will have their work cut out for them against a good opponent, I predict that the travelling side will find a way to take all three points from their opponents.
Verdict
I am backing Villa to secure the points as they showcase their ability to win in Europe.
