England sank to a heartbreaking 2-1 loss at the hands of Spain in the final of Euro 2024, with their last match the final time Gareth Southgate would lead the team.

Head To Head

England hammered Ireland 3-0 when the pair met back in 2020, with England winning three of their last 10 against their opponents, with Ireland winning once and the other six ending as draws.

Ireland Form

Ireland have found goals and wins tough to come by in recent outings, with the side scoring in just two of their last four, while they have secured one win in their last four.

Their 3-0 loss to Portugal ahead of Euro 2024 saw Ireland struggle to get up to the speed their opponents were playing at, with the Portuguese heading to the competition and Ireland sitting it out. With this in mind, their limp 3-0 defeat was hardly surprising.

While starting the Nations League with a win will be important if Ireland are to enjoy a strong campaign, they take on an English side in good form, with their opponents looking to begin the post-Gareth Southgate era with a win.

England Form

Despite making it to the final of Euro 2024, England did not quite reach the levels the fans have come to expect from them.

Their 2-1 loss to Spain in the final saw the better team win, but England gave their fans hope as they equalised in the 73rd minute through Cole Palmer. While they did slip to defeat, they put on show a never-say-die attitude that means they will be tough to beat going forward.

While England will likely have some teething problems as they adjust to life following the departure of Gareth Southgate, they should have far too much for an Irish side that is not on their level.

Verdict

I am backing England to keep a clean sheet in this one as they ease to their first win following the departure of Gareth Southgate.
