Japan vs Paraguay Preview & Tips

Japan were beaten 2-0 by the USA in their last match as their winless run was extended to two matches.

Paraguay beat Peru 1-0 in their last outing as they ended their own run of two without a win.

  • Japan have won four of their last six matches (L1, D1)
  • Paraguay have lost their last four against Japan
  • Both sides have seen less than 2.5 goals scored in their last four outings

Head To Head

In their last 10 meetings, Japan have secured five wins with the other five games ending as draws. Importantly, Japan have won their last four against Paraguay.

Japan Form

Japan saw a very impressive run of four consecutive wins make way for two without victory as their September international break failed to really ignite.

A 0-0 draw with Mexico was followed by a 2-0 defeat to the USA, with Japan failing to score across either friendly. While friendlies will not have any impact on the World Cup next year, failing to beat either of the pair will be a worry as both will be at the World Cup as host nations.

I back Japan to bounce back from their disappointing results in September with a win in this one. They have beaten Paraguay in their last four meetings, while they have won their last three at home. While I do not expect a lot of goals, I do predict a Japanese win.

Paraguay Form

Paraguay were good in their run of matches in September as they went unbeaten by drawing 0-0 with Ecuador before beating Peru 1-0. This run of results helped them to secure their place at the World Cup next summer.

Now, the focus will be on building towards the major tournament. Japan will be one of the other teams taking part at the competition in 2026, meaning the sides may yet meet. A win in this one would be a major boost then, especially if the pair are put in a group together.

However, Paraguay's poor run against Japan is a worry. They have lost their last four against their opponents, while prior to this losing run, they had drawn their previous five. Their only win came back in 1999. I predict nothing other than Paraguay failing to end their torrid run against Japan.

Verdict

I am backing a low scoring match in which Japan secure the win as less than 2.5 goals are scored.
