Liverpool vs Newcastle Preview & Tips
Liverpool hammered Qarabag 6-0 in their Champions League game in midweek as they bounced back from a stunning 3-2 loss to Bournemouth last weekend.
Newcastle were beaten 2-0 by Aston Villa in their last league game as their winless run in the competition was extended to two games.
- The Reds have seen both sides score in their last two league games
- Newcastle have lost two of their last four on the road in the league (W1, D1)
Head To Head
Liverpool have won eight of their last 10 against the Magpies, with Newcastle winning once and one game ending as a draw.
Liverpool Form
Despite enduring a hugely inconsistent season so far, Liverpool are still on course to snare a Champions League spot for next term.
Their haul of 36 points from 10 wins, six draws and seven defeats means they are only two points behind Manchester United in fourth. While they come into this one winless in their last five league games following four draws and one defeat, when expanding this to include all competitions, they have won three of their last five, losing once.
The Reds have struggled for wins in the league this year, but their 6-0 win over Qarabag may yet be a turning point for the reigning champions. While their opponents were of a low quality, netting six times in Europe is always impressive, and I predict they will continue their impressive scoring at the weekend as they try to catch sides above them like Manchester City, who face Tottenham this week.
Newcastle Form
Newcastle are now winless in their last two in the league, while they have only won one of their last five in all competitions. This run has seen the Magpies lose to Manchester City in the cup and Aston Villa in the league, while they have drawn with Wolves and PSG, with their only win coming over PSV.
While the Magpies have had to play some strong sides of late, their draw with lowly Wolves and loss to Aston Villa at home is a huge worry for a side that is now five points short of the Champions League spots.
While I predict that the Magpies will find a way to breach Liverpool's leaky defence, I do not back them to win this one as they slip to a third without a win in the league.
Verdict
I am backing both sides to hit the back of the net as Liverpool storm to victory at Anfield.
