Manchester City vs Newcastle Preview & Tips
Manchester City put one foot in the EFL Cup final after an impressive 2-0 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park in their previous meeting in the competition.
Newcastle need to put in one of the great EFL Cup performances if they are to come back from 2-0 down against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
- Each of City’s EFL Cup games have been won with a two-goal margin
- Newcastle have lost two of their last three against City (W1)
Head To Head
City have secured wins in six of their last 10 against Newcastle, with the Magpies winning twice and two games ending as draws.
Manchester City Form
Manchester City know that anything other than a defeat by two goals or more will see them take their place at Wembley for the EFL Cup final.
Their 2-0 win at St James’ Park has put them on the front-foot, and they will be supremely confident they can secure another victory at home. Indeed, each of their last four in the competition have all ended in wins by exactly two goals.
While Newcastle will give City’s often leaky defence some real issues, I do not back them to outscore their hosts. Indeed, City seem to have rekindled the sort of form that means they are battling across competitions for a range of trophies.
Newcastle Form
Newcastle need to be nearly perfect in the second-leg of their EFL Cup semi-final against Manchester City after losing the first-leg 2-0.
Scoring the first goal will really put the cat amongst the pigeons, but if they are to concede first, their job will be near impossible. City are adept at picking the opposition off, and it means that the Magpies will have to be even more aggressive if they concede first, which plays into City’s hands.
While the Magpies will hope to channel some of the spirit that saw the secure the EFL Cup last season, I do not see them beating City in this one as the defence of their title ends in the semi-finals. This will see the Magpies fail to take their place against one of Arsenal or Chelsea in the final.
Verdict
I am backing City to win this one by two goals as they cruise into the final of the EFL Cup.
