Manchester United know they need a morale-boosting win in midweek after failing to win any of their last three in all competitions.

Real Sociedad are on the cusp of a big European result, with the Spanish side arriving level on aggregate after a solid showing at home.

The two sides have met seven times in total, with United winning three times, Sociedad winning once and the other three ending as draws.

Manchester United’s season hangs by a thread, with the English side arriving for the second-leg of their Europa League Round of 16 tie desperately needing a win.

Already out of the League Cup and FA Cup, United’s only hope of silverware this year lies in the Europa League. Indeed, they find themselves closer to the relegation zone than they are to Liverpool at the summit in the Premier League.

The worry for the home side is that they are winless in their last three. Their 1-1 draw with Arsenal was a positive result considering the form of the pair, but this United side have been used to competing with Arsenal in recent decades rather than holding on for a draw.

Ruben Amorim needs a win in this one, with his short tenure hardly inspiring. The one man he has continually been able to turn to is Bruno Fernandes. His captain fired in the opener against Arsenal at the weekend, and with three goals across his last five games, I am backing him to score a crucial goal for the home team.

Real Sociedad Form

Real Sociedad arrive for their midweek match knowing that they have every chance of claiming a major scalp in the European game. While Manchester United have been nowhere near good enough this season, a win for the Spanish side at Old Trafford would be a major statement.

The issue for the travelling side is that they are now winless in their last four in all competitions following a 1-0 home loss to Sevilla at the weekend. Three defeats have come in this time, with Sociedad only avoiding defeat against United last week.

The worry for the visitors is that they have lost their last two away games, while they have been beaten in five of their last six on the road. Unfortunately for Sociedad, I predict they will slip to a hugely disappointing defeat in the second-leg.

Verdict

Man Utd v Real Sociedad

I am backing United to secure a vital win in this one as they end their three-game losing run. I am also backing Fernandes to continue to highlight his importance to his team with another goal.
