Marseille vs Liverpool Preview & Tips


Marseille eased to a 3-2 win over Royale Union SG in their last game to extend their winning run in Europe to two matches.

Liverpool are looking to consolidate their position in the standings with a fifth win in seven matches.

The two sides have met six times in total, with Liverpool winning three games, Marseille winning twice and one game ending as a draw.

Marseille sit in 16th in the standings with nine points, meaning the French side are only three short of Liverpool in ninth and Atletico Madrid in eighth.

Victory in this one would seriously enhance their chances of taking a top eight spot, although they will have to hope that a range of strong teams above them drop points in game week seven if they are to move into the top eight.

While Marseille will be confident they can give Liverpool problems, I predict that they will slip to defeat in this one. Each of Marseille's three defeats in the competition have come by a single goal, and I believe they will suffer another defeat by a narrow margin in this one.

Liverpool Form


Despite losing two of their six Champions League games, Liverpool find themselves missing out on a top eight spot by virtue of their slightly inferior goal difference to Atletico Madrid. 

Despite this, the Reds can enhance their top eight hopes with a win in midweek. Two of their three away games have ended in wins, with victories over Eintracht Frankfurt (5-1) and Inter Milan (1-0) seeing the English side impress.

Four of Liverpool’s matches in Europe have see the winner take all three points by virtue of a one-goal margin, with the Reds benefitting from this three times. With this in mind, I am backing the travelling side to secure all three points in an important win as they stay clear of a range of teams including Chelsea, who take on Pafos on Wednesday. 

Verdict

I am backing Liverpool to grind out a one-goal win as they edge closer to securing a top eight Champions League place.
