Newcastle vs Qarabag Preview & Tips
Newcastle put in a supreme first-leg performance against Qarabag last week as they stormed to a 6-1 win that has eased any fears of an embarrassing exit.
Qarabag were unable to keep the tie alive heading into the second-leg as they were hammered by the Magpies.
- Newcastle have seen both sides score in four of their last five European matches
- Qarabag have lost their last three matches on the road in the competition
Head To Head
The pair have only met once before, with the Magpies storming to a 6-1 win over their opponents last week.
Newcastle Form
Newcastle have been in good form across their Champions League campaign, only tasting defeat in two of their nine matches to this point.
A 2-1 loss to Barcelona in game one was followed by a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Marseille in France. Since then, they have beaten Royale Union SG, Benfica, Athletic Bilbao and PSV in the group stage, while they have taken a point on the road against Bayer Leverkusen and PSG.
In the first-leg of their playoff, Newcastle were the ultimate professionals as they refused to allow the difference in quality between the two sides to see them take Qarabag lightly. Leading 5-0 at half-time, the tie was already over, and they maintained their five-goal advantage as they secured a 6-1 triumph.
While the beauty of the Champions League is that anything could happen, this tie is one that is already over. I predict that the Magpies will concede in this one, but I do not back them to lose at home as they extend their impressive record in Europe.
Qarabag Form
Qarabag’s objective in the first-leg of their clash with Newcastle would have been to still be in the tie ahead of the second-leg, but they failed dismally.
Going 2-0 down after eight minutes saw Qarabag immediately give themselves a huge hill to climb, and this hill became a mountain as they continued to concede, with Anthony Gordon’s 46th minute goal seeing the Magpies take a 5-0 lead at half-time.
While Qarabag did get on the scoreboard, they are completely outmatched heading into this one. Beating Newcastle by a goal at St James’ Park would be a huge result for the side, but outscoring them by five-goals simply will not happen.
While I back Qarabag to score, I predict that they will have to remain contented with breaching Newcastle’s defence twice over the course of the tie rather than beating them.
Verdict
I am backing Newcastle to secure a pair of wins over Qarabag as they move into the Champions League Round of 16.
