Portsmouth vs Arsenal Preview & Tips

Portsmouth have the chance to eliminate the team sitting at the top of the English football league ladder this weekend as they take on Arsenal at Fratton Park.

Arsenal are looking to enhance their hopes of securing the quadruple this season as they travel to take on Portsmouth in the 3rd round of the FA Cup.

  • Arsenal have won their last three away games in all competitions
  • Pompey have lost to Arsenal in their last five meetings

Head To Head

Arsenal have won six of their last 10 against Portsmouth, with the other four games ending as draws.

Portsmouth Form

Portsmouth enter the FA Cup by welcoming the top side in the English league system. The lure of beating an Arsenal side that is currently on course to win the Premier League will give a massive boost to both the players and the fans.

Fratton Park will likely be rocking at the weekend and this will see Arsenal given a tough opening period. If Portsmouth are to win this game, they will have to make the most out of a fast start as they look to come flying out the blocks.

If Arsenal are to rotate their squad, then Portsmouth may yet find some space, but even Arsenal’s second-string side should be far too strong for the home team. While I back Portsmouth to have their moment in the game, I do not see them winning this one.

Arsenal Form

Arsenal arrive for their latest match looking to extend an excellent run that has seen the Gunners move to the top of the Premier League and Champions League tables, with their hopes of winning the EFL Cup and FA Cup also still alive.

Arsenal will likely have one eye on Manchester City's clash with Exeter, with the pair locked in a battle for trophies across competitions.

Their last three away games across competitions has seen the Gunners beat Club Brugge, Everton and Bournemouth, although they have failed to keep clean sheets in their last four.

While I back the Gunners to make it into the fourth round with a win at Fratton Park, I do not back them to keep a clean sheet, with their failure to win to nil going on.

Verdict

I am backing Arsenal to secure the win as both sides find the back of the net in an entertaining FA Cup match at Fratton Park.
