PSG vs Chelsea Preview & Tips

PSG were just about able to eliminate Ligue 1 rivals Monaco in the last round as they edged to a 5-4 aggregate win in an enthralling tie.

Chelsea downed Napoli 3-2 in their last Champions League outing but have been inconsistent since then, winning five of their subsequent nine matches in all competitions.

  • Chelsea have seen both sides score in their last four in all tournaments
  • PSG have scored and failed to keep a clean sheet in their last four in Europe
  • Chelsea’s only two European defeats both came on the road

Head To Head

PSG have won three of their last 10 against the Blues with Chelsea winning three times and four games ending as draws.

PSG Form

PSG’s defence of their Champions League title hit something of a road block in the group phase of the competition as the reigning champions stumbled to 11th with 14 points.

Their tally of four wins, two draws and two defeats meant they were two short of Manchester City in eighth and an automatic spot in the Round of 16. In the playoffs, PSG had their work cut out for them as they edged to an unconvincing 4-3 aggregate win over Monaco in a tie that could have gone either way.

While PSG will fancy themselves against their inconsistent opponent, the importance of heading to London with a lead will not be lost on them. With the defence of their title already under threat, I am backing PSG to show their class as they beat Chelsea in the first-leg.

Chelsea Form

Despite finishing the group stage of the Champions League in sixth, Chelsea really have their work cut out for them if they are to get anywhere near the final of the competition this year.

Sobering defeats against Bayern Munich (3-1) and Atalanta (2-1) show the Blues have a real issue on the road in Europe, while they arrive for this one having won just two of their last four in all tournaments, losing once and drawing once.

Scoring has not tended to be an issue for Chelsea, with the side netting at least once across their last seven, but they have struggled at the back, failing to keep a clean sheet in their last four. While I back the Blues to score, I do not see their leaky defence keeping a clean sheet with this costing them in the first-leg.

Verdict

I am backing PSG to secure a statement win in the first-leg despite seeing the Blues hit the back of the net.
