PSG vs Newcastle Preview & Tips

PSG were consigned to a stunning 2-1 loss at the hands of Sporting Lisbon in their last match as their winless run in the competition was extended to two games.

Newcastle secured a crucial 3-0 win over PSV in their last outing as they moved into seventh in the Champions League standings.

  • PSG have seen both sides score in five of their last six in the competition
  • Newcastle have seen both sides hit the back of the net in their last two away games in Europe
  • PSG have won two of their three at home in the competition (L1)

Head To Head

The pair have met twice before, with Newcastle winning once and the other game ending as a draw.

PSG Form

PSG are in desperate need of a win after picking up a single point across their last two matches following a draw with Athletic Bilbao and a defeat on the road against Sporting Lisbon.

This run has seen the French side drag themselves onto 13 points from their seven matches. This means they only sit in the top eight by virtue of their superior goal difference to Barcelona in ninth.

Across the competition, PSG have been the joint top scorers with 20 goals, but they have also conceded 10 times. Clearly, the home team have had some difficulty keeping the ball out of their own net, and I predict that despite winning their final group game, they will be made to sweat against a Newcastle side that has scored against them in both previous meetings.

Newcastle Form

Newcastle’s 3-0 win over PSV was a timely return to form for the English side after they had picked up a single point from their two previous games.

Their big win has catapulted them up to seventh in the standings with 13 points, while it has also boosted their goal difference to +10, better than Chelsea, Barcelona, Sporting Lisbon, Manchester City, Atletico Madrid and Atalanta, who all sit on 13 points.

While I predict that the Magpies will give PSG issues at the back, I do not see them winning this match. Despite their poor run, PSG are still one of the best teams in Europe, and they will be confident at home.

Defeat will likely see Newcastle slip behind Manchester City, who face Galatasaray in their final group game.

Verdict

I am backing the home side to secure the win in an entertaining game between two teams desperate for the points.
