Qarabag vs Newcastle Preview & Tips
Qarabag head into their clash with Newcastle with little to fear after impressing in their home matches in the Champions League this season.
Newcastle know they are the favourites for victory in this one, but winning this match will hardly be straightforward.
- Qarabag have only lost one of their four Champions League group games (W2, D1)
- Newcastle have drawn their last two on the road in the competition
Head To Head
This match will be the first time the pair have come together in a competitive football match.
Qarabag Form
Despite having to stomach a 6-0 loss at the hands of Liverpool in their last Champions League match, Qarabag arrive in good form at home and they will be aiming to still be in the tie ahead of their trip to St James' Park in the second-leg.
On the road, Qarabag have lost their last three outings. However, at home they have won twice, drawn once and lost once, with the side proving tough to beat. Having already taken a point from Chelsea in an impressive 2-2 draw back in November, Qarabag will be confident that they can stun another Premier League opponent.
While I do not back the home side to win this one, I believe they will still be in the tie heading into the second-leg, helping them to pile the pressure on favourites Newcastle.
Newcastle Form
Newcastle arrive for the first-leg of their clash with Qarabag in good form in the Champions League having taken a point on the road against Bayer Leverkusen and PSG, with these draws sandwiching a win over PSV at home.
Their draws with Leverkusen and PSG were impressive results, with the latter particularly good. However, they were also beaten by Marseille on the road as they were left wanting at the back in a tough match.
While I predict that Newcastle will take their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League by the end of this playoff, I believe they will have to win at St James' Park after being forced to settle for a draw on the road.
Verdict
I predict that this match will end in a draw as Qarabag prove they are no pushovers.
