Real Madrid vs Monaco Preview & Tips
Real Madrid were stunned by Manchester City in their last European match as they were beaten by an English Premier League side for the second time in the space of three games.
Monaco edged to a 1-0 win over Galatasaray in their last Champions League match as they extended their unbeaten run in Europe to five matches.
- Real have won four of their six in Europe this season
- Monaco have scored in five of their six matches in the competition
Head To Head
The pair have met two times before, with Real winning once and Monaco winning once.
Real Madrid Form
Real Madrid were not good enough in their last clash against Manchester City, with their 2-1 defeat constituting their second loss in six Champions League matches.
While the Spanish side sit in seventh in the standings with 12 points, they are only afforded that place by their superior goal difference to Liverpool in ninth. Defeat in their seventh game will more than likely see Real slide down the table and out of the top eight.
While the Spanish giants have been far from convincing of late, I back them to turn up when it matters. Real’s affinity for the Champions League sees them as perennial contenders regardless of how their season is going. With their need for a win huge, I back a big performance from Real in midweek.
Monaco Form
Monaco currently sit in 19th in the Champions League table with nine points, meaning they are three clear of Benfica in 25th.
A win in their seventh match of the campaign coupled with Benfica, Pafos and Royale Union SG all failing to win will see the side confirm their place in the playoffs at least. However, they have a Real side that know they also need to win to consolidate their position in the top eight.
This scrap for points should be incredibly tight, with neither side wanting to give an inch on the field. Monaco have avoided defeat across their last five European games, but the quality of opponent they have faced in their last three (Bodo/Glimt, Pafos and Galatasaray) is relatively low.
I predict that Monaco will struggle to secure the win they need in their seventh match. The travelling side have made a point out of scoring, hitting the back of the net in five of their six matches. While I back them to breach Real’s defence, I do not see them winning this one as they see their hopes of notching a Champions League playoff spot taken down to the final match.
Verdict
I am backing Real Madrid to take the points in this one despite once again failing to keep a clean sheet in Europe.
