Real Sociedad vs Manchester United Preview & Tips

Real Sociedad eased into the Europa League Round of 16 on the back of a commanding 7-3 win over Midtjylland in the last round.

Manchester United went through as one of the top-eight in the Europa League group stage, but they have hardly been convincing across their campaign to this point.

Sociedad have won their last four home games in Europe

The pair have met six times, with United winning three matches, Sociedad winning once and two games ending as draws.

Real Sociedad Form

Real Sociedad ended the group-stage sitting in 13th, with four wins, one draw and three defeats seeing them onto 13 points. While there were a number of sides between them and Rangers in eighth. they were only a point short of making it straight through to the Round of 16.

Their clash with Midtjylland threatened to be an awkward tie, but they scored the first two goals on the road against their opponents and never looked back as they ultimately secured a 7-3 aggregate win.

While United did move into the knockout phase as one of the top-eight sides, they have been very poor of late. With most of the pressure on the travelling side, Sociedad will come into this one knowing that they can hurt an opponent that has been hugely underwhelming this season.

Manchester United Form

Manchester United have been painful to watch at times this season, with this no more evident than in their loss on penalties to Fulham in the FA Cup at the weekend.

An insipid performance across the first-half in particular put United on the backfoot, and they really struggled to create any momentum. Now, their only hope of silverware comes in the Europa League, but I do not predict that the competition will hold much joy for them.

Sociedad arrive for this one on the back of defeats to Barcelona and Real Madrid, but the quality of opposition in this one is very different. The home side have every chance of putting United under pressure, and I believe they will get a big result as United's leaky defence comes back to haunt them.

I am backing both sides to score in this one as the pair trade blows. I am also backing Sociedad to secure a very important result as they head to Old Trafford on the back of a win in the first-leg.
