Tottenham vs Borussia Dortmund Preview & Tips
Tottenham are still in the hunt for a top eight spot in the Champions League despite enduring a less-than-stellar domestic season so far.
Borussia Dortmund travel to England knowing that they can seriously enhance their top eight prospects by taking all three points from Spurs.
- Both sides have drawn two of their six European matches this season
- Dortmund’s last game ended in a 2-2 draw with Bodo/Glimt
Head To Head
The pair have met six times in total, with Spurs winning four matches and Dortmund winning twice.
Tottenham Form
Despite struggling across their domestic season, Tottenham have found form in Europe’s top competition, winning three of their opening six, drawing twice and only losing once.
Their haul of 11 points means they are only one point behind Atletico Madrid in eighth, while they are only two points behind PSG in third. With three consecutive wins at home, Tottenham have built their campaign on winning at home and being tough to beat away from home.
The major worry for Spurs will be that they have hardly played top quality opposition at home. A 1-0 win over Villarreal was followed by wins over Copenhagen (4-0) and Slavia Prague (3-0), with the standard of the trio they have beaten in London hardly high.
With this in mind, I predict that Tottenham will have to remain content with taking a point from their fourth home game. Borussia Dortmund are a quality outfit and the woes Spurs have been consigned to of late will likely see their hopes of securing a top eight spot take a major blow.
Borussia Dortmund Form
Like Tottenham, Borussia Dortmund have won three of their opening six, with two games ending as draws and one match ending in defeat.
On the road, Dortmund have won once, drawn once and lost once. A 4-4 draw with Juventus saw Dortmund relinquish a 4-2 lead in the 94th minute as the Germans conceded twice in two minutes. They were then able to ease to a 4-2 win over Copenhagen before they were played off the pair in a 4-1 loss to Manchester City.
Their 4-4 draw with Juventus is perhaps the match that most closely resembles the quality of opponent they will face in their game against Tottenham. Dortmund are far better than Copenhagen, while City were the superior side in their clash.
Tottenham, Dortmund and Juventus are all fairly evenly-matched in this years Champions League. With Dortmund taking a point from their away game against the Italian side, I predict that they will do the same in London this week as they potentially lose ground on those above them.
Verdict
I am backing the pair to share the points in this one as two well-matched sides fail to pick up the win.
