Wales vs Belgium Preview & Tips
Wales were woefully bad in their friendly against England as they slipped to a 3-0 loss at the hands of their opponents.
Belgium will hope to take a big step towards the World Cup in 2026 with a win over a Welsh side that sits just behind them in qualifying.
- Two of the last four meetings between the sides have ended in 1-1 draws
- The last six games involving the nations have seen both sides fail to keep a clean sheet
Head To Head
In their last 10 meetings, Belgium have won four times, Wales have secured two victories and there have been four draws.
Wales Form
Wales were nowhere near good enough against England in their recent friendly as their 3-0 loss gave the side a reality check.
Going 3-0 down in 20 minutes would likely have seen Wales eventually humiliated in a competitive game, with the Welsh lucky that England really took their foot off the accelerator. Of course, it is worth noting that this was a friendly, and Wales will have had more than one eye on their must-win clash with Belgium. The major worry comes from Wales losing heavily to their biggest rivals without ever really throwing a punch.
With Wales coming from a match-up in which they have been awful to one they have had relative success in, the home side will be confident. If the Welsh can emulate previous qualifying performances, then they can take something from the visitors.
I back them to do just that as they hold Belgium for the third time in five meetings.
Belgium Form
Belgium have their World Cup fate in their own hands, with the nation currently sitting in second in Group J after winning three of their opening five. While they trail North Macedonia by a point, they have played a game less than the leaders.
Unlike many other qualifying groups, there is a real scrap for the top spots. Any of Belgium, North Macedonia or Wales could go through top, while the battle for second place is also fierce. Ultimately, a team like Belgium should be embarrassed if they are pipped to the top by either of North Macedonia or Wales. While both have excelled in qualifying, neither should outdo Belgium.
The frustration for Belgium will be that they have been poor against Wales in recent meetings. Their 4-3 win at home was pulsating, but it saw them win the match in the 88th minute after they had seen a 3-0 lead wiped away. Prior to this, Belgium have drawn two of their previous three with Wales, with the other game seeing Belgium win by a one goal margin.
I back a tight match in this one as Belgium drop points for the second time in two matches after their toothless 0-0 draw with North Macedonia. The last six meetings between the pair have seen both teams score, and I back this trend to continue.
Verdict
I am backing both sides to fail to keep a clean sheet as the points are shared.
