The pair have only met once once before, with Gauff winning in Auckland back in 2023.

Tatjana Maria may be well into the twilight of her career, but the 37-year-old rolled back the clock in round one of the US open as she hammered Solana Sierra in a match that lasted little more than an hour.

This triumph put an end to a two-match losing run, although the first of these defeats came in the final in Barranquilla earlier in the month. While Maria is yet to win a Grand Slam title, she has previous of playing in big games.

Despite being in impressive form of late, I predict that Maria will have to stomach her 27th defeat in 48 matches in 2024.

Coco Gauff Form

Coco Gauff was brilliant in the opening round of the US Open, taking just 66 minutes to hammer Varvara Gracheva 6-2 6-0.

This win allowed Gauff to end a two-match losing run, while she has lost four of her last eight in a run of results that has hardly been ideal. Perhaps her clash with Maria is the perfect chance for her to make it two victories in a row and really get the ball rolling in the last Slam of the year.

While the pressure will be on Gauff in this one as Maria battles for a shock win, it is fanciful to back anything other than a comfortable win for Gauff.
