Newcastle were able to ease to a 1-0 win over Brest in their final preseason match as they made it two wins in as many games.

Newcastle have won eight of their last 10 against the Saints, with the latter winning once and one game ending as a draw.

Newcastle struggled to match the exploits of their 2022/23 season as they failed to secure a Champions League spot this term.

18 wins in 38 attempts was a fairly good return, but they lost 14 times, which was the equal most of any side in the top nine in the league. If the Magpies are to prove they were not one-hit-wonders when it comes to snaring a Champions League spot, then they simply have to start with a win over a newly-promoted side at home.

The Magpies have won their last five matches against Southampton, although I predict that they will have to settle for a tight win in their opening match of the season.

Southampton battled through the playoffs in the 2023/24 season, with the side securing promotion on the back of a 1-0 win over Leeds in the showpiece clash at Wembley.

Since then, the Saints have played a raft of friendlies, winning four of their seven matches. Worrying for the outfit is the fact that they have only won one of their last four, while they have drawn their last two, scoring a single goal in this time.

While the Saints have managed to concede a single goal across their last two, they have not been good enough going forward. With this in mind, I believe they will struggle to break their hosts down in game one as they slip to defeat in their opening match.
