Tottenham Hotspur vs AZ Alkmaar Preview & Tips

Tottenham have to win their midweek match against AZ Alkmaar if they are to have any hope of securing some form of silverware this season.

AZ Alkmaar have the advantage heading into their second-leg clash against Tottenham in London after securing a 1-0 win in the first-leg.

Head To Head

The pair have met twice before, with both teams winning once each. The away side in this fixture is yet to score a goal or win.

Tottenham Hotspur Form

Tottenham will hope that their second-half rally against Bournemouth at the weekend is a mark of better things to come after they came from 2-0 down to secure a point in a 2-2 draw.

Positively for Spurs, they are yet to lose a home game in the Europa League this season. Indeed, wins over Qarabag, AZ Alkmaar and Elfsborg have come alongside a battling 2-2 draw with Roma.

Heung-Min Son has had a quiet season by his high standards, but he scored the crucial penalty in his last outing to make it 2-2 against the Cherries. I am backing him to secure another goal as he leads his beleaguered Spurs side to a vital win.

AZ Alkmaar Form

AZ Alkmaar gave themselves a great chance to move into the quarter-finals of the Europa League as they notched an impressive 1-0 win over Tottenham last week.

Victory helped them to bounce back from their 1-0 loss to Tottenham back in October, while it also allowed them to get back to winning ways after drawing 2-2 with Galatasaray in the playoffs. Now, the travelling side knows that anything other than a defeat plays into their hands. A draw or win will see them go through, while a defeat by a single goal will send the tie into extra-time.

While the travelling side have the advantage, this will be a real test of what they are made of. Spurs have to bounce back, with a number of stars playing poorly and costing their side points and wins. I am backing the home side to rekindle that winning feeling at the expense of an opponent they have already beaten this season.

Verdict

Tottenham v AZ

I am backing Heung-Min Son to get on the scoresheet as Tottenham secure a win that keeps their dreams of silverware alive.
