Argentina were left stunned in their last match as they lost 20-19 to Australia in a clash they were favourites to win.

Australia ended a run of two defeats on the bounce as they won on the road for the first time under Joe Schmidt.

Argentina have secured two wins in their last 10 against Australia, with the Aussies winning six times and the other two ending as draws.

Argentina slipped to their second defeat in as many matches as their 20-19 loss to Australia meant they failed to secure the win that would have seen them leapfrog New Zealand and into second.

Despite playing some good rugby and cutting their opponents open throughout the clash, Argentina could not build enough of a lead to enter the final stages in complete control. Ultimately, they saw Ben Donaldson knock over an 81st minute penalty that saw Argentina beaten.

This week, the home side will need to build on their defeat last time out. Their pack looked good, while they were excellent with the ball in hand. Australia are not a side that look like they will blow another team away, so if Argentina can build their own lead in the game, then the Pumas should win comfortably as the travelling side falters late on.

Australia have not looked comfortable in the 2024 Rugby Championship, with the Aussies winning once and losing their other two games.

While their win over Argentina last week saw the Aussies play some good rugby, they have hardly shone. Indeed, their matches against South Africa saw them lose by 18 points or more across the space of a week. Against a strong opponent, Australia continue to struggle.

While Joe Schmidt is adding more solidity to this Australian side, they still lack that cutting edge that Aussie sides of the past have championed. With this in mind, I am backing the travelling side to slip to defeat this weekend.
