Holger Rune made it to the semi-finals in Basel last week as he edged towards the end of the tennis season in good form.

Matteo Arnaldi is looking to avoid a second consecutive first round exit when he takes to the court in Paris this week.

This will be the vert first tie the two players have met on the court.

Holger Rune was within a single win of appearing in the final in Basel only to get knocked out of the competition in straight sets by Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
His performance was hugely disappointing as prior to the semi-finals, Rune had not dropped a single set, winning three consecutive matches 2-0. Despite this disappointing end to his campaign in Basel, Rune has impressed of late, making it to the semi-finals in both Tokyo and Basel, with these streaks sandwiching a run to the fourth round in Shanghai.
While Matteo Arnaldi is hardly the ideal first round opponent, I am backing Rune to get the job done in straight sets in this one.
Matteo Arnaldi Form
Matteo Arnaldi has struggled to impose himself in tournaments of late, with a string of early exits seeing him arrive for the competition in Paris in need of a win.
His run to the semi-finals in Montreal in August has been followed by first round defeats in Cincinnati, Tokyo and Basel, with third round exits at the US Open and in Shanghai his best runs for months.
On his day, Arnaldi is a tough opponent to beat, but I am not predicting that he will be given much to work with against an opponent in good form.
Verdict
I am backing Rune to easily win this one as he secures the win in the first round.
